A GOAL, IF IT’S YOUR GOAL

Exams &
qualifications.

Learn for enjoyment, work towards a recognised qualification—or enjoy both.

An exam can give your learning direction, a goal to work towards and a way to recognise what you've achieved. At Derby Piano Academy, exam preparation is available to adults and children who want it.

You can also learn without taking an exam. Enjoying music and becoming a more confident player are worthwhile goals in their own right.

Choose a pathway that suits you

Different pupils enjoy different music and respond to different goals. We'll discuss your interests, current playing and the instrument you use before choosing an appropriate pathway.

The exact syllabus and assessment format will depend on the pathway we choose. We'll check the current requirements together before you buy exam materials or make an entry.

Preparation that develops your playing

Preparing for an exam should help you become a better musician. We'll work on understanding the music, developing reliable technique, practising effectively and playing with expression and confidence.

Where your chosen exam requires them, preparation can also include scales, sight-reading, listening skills and musical knowledge. We'll break the work into manageable steps and give you clear guidance between lessons.

For adults and children

You can work towards an exam as an adult beginner, a returning player or a child developing their musical foundations. We start with your experience and readiness, rather than assuming everyone should follow the same timetable.

There is no need to decide on exams before you begin lessons. We can discuss them once you've had time to settle in and discover what you enjoy.

Personal support from Ed

I hold ABRSM Grade 8 in Piano Practical and Grade 8 Music Theory, and have worked as a professional pianist and keyboardist since 1982. Alongside more than 40 years of teaching experience, that background informs the practical guidance and musical understanding I bring to lessons.

My role is to help you prepare carefully and approach your chosen goal with confidence, while keeping enjoyment at the heart of learning.

Lessons and your instrument

Lessons take place primarily live online through Google Meet, at your own piano or keyboard. Selective home visits are also available in Derby where appropriate and practical.

Before choosing an exam, we'll check that your instrument and any proposed recording setup meet the relevant board's requirements. A lesson taught online does not automatically mean the exam itself is taken online.

Questions
about exams.

Do I have to take exams?

No. Exams are optional. You can learn for enjoyment, develop your skills and make meaningful progress without taking one.

Can adults work towards exams?

Yes. Exam preparation is available to adults as well as children. We'll discuss a suitable route based on your interests and experience.

Which board should I choose?

We'll consider your instrument, musical interests and preferred way of learning, then look at an appropriate syllabus together. There is no single board that is the best fit for every pupil.

Can I prepare through online lessons?

Yes. Lessons can support your exam preparation live through Google Meet. The assessment format and instrument requirements depend on your chosen board and syllabus.

How do I discuss an examination pathway?

Message Ed on WhatsApp with your instrument, any previous learning and what you would like to achieve. You do not need to have chosen a board or grade. Ed can discuss a suitable pathway and explain the next steps.
