Parents often tell me they want their child to enjoy music, make steady progress, and feel proud of what they play — without pressure. That’s exactly how I teach at Derby Piano Academy: warm, confidence-building lessons with clear steps and lots of encouragement.
What we’ll cover here
- How children’s lessons work (format, pacing, first few weeks)
- Practice that really happens at home
- Instrument advice (what to buy and where to look)
- FAQs for parents and next steps to book a trial
How lessons work
- Location: 1-to-1 at your home across Derby & nearby suburbs, or online via Zoom
- Duration: 30-minute lessons for most ages; 60 minutes for older/advanced learners
- Approach: Traditional reading & technique + fun, modern pieces
- ABRSM: available when helpful — never compulsory or rushed
- Parents welcome: you can sit in for all or part of any lesson
Traditional + Modern, tailored to your child
We build strong foundations — posture, hand shape, rhythm, note-reading — while playing music children recognise and enjoy (film themes, catchy patterns, simple duets).
For early beginners I often compose bespoke pieces so they experience quick wins and build confidence from week one.
The first few weeks
- Week 1: posture, hand shape, first tune, and a tiny practice task.
- Weeks 2–3: reading simple patterns, both hands, steady rhythm.
- Week 4+: a favourite piece, confidence building, and an easy routine to keep progress moving.
You’ll know exactly what to practise and why — I send clear notes so parents can help without needing a musical background.
Practice that fits family life
- Start with 10–15 minutes a day, most days.
- Simple practice charts and small goals keep it positive.
- Short demonstration videos or notes when helpful.
Do we need a piano or keyboard?
Yes — daily practice is where the magic happens. I’ll give free, impartial advice before you buy (new or used). Many families start affordably and upgrade later.
