Many adults quietly worry they’ve “left it too late.” You haven’t. After more than forty years teaching in Derby, I’ve helped complete beginners and long-away returners build confidence at the piano with steady steps and music they genuinely enjoy.
What we’ll cover here
- How adult lessons work (format, pace, first few weeks)
- Practice that fits a busy week
- Instrument advice (what to buy and where to look)
- FAQs and simple next steps to start
How lessons work
- Location: 1-to-1 at your home across Derby & nearby suburbs, or online via Zoom
- Duration: 30-minute or 60-minute weekly sessions
- Approach: clear reading & technique with music you enjoy (classical, film, pop, jazz)
- ABRSM: available when helpful — never compulsory
Practice that fits a busy week
Most adults do well with 10–20 minutes a day, 4–5 days a week. I’ll set a compact plan so every minute counts, with small wins that keep motivation high.
Prefer a gentler pace? No problem. We’ll adjust the routine around work, family and energy — progress without pressure.
The first few weeks
- Week 1: posture, hand shape, a first tune, and a simple plan.
- Weeks 2–3: reading patterns, steady rhythm, both hands.
- Week 4+: a piece you choose — classical, film, pop, or jazz.
Do I need my own piano or keyboard?
Yes — a little daily practice makes all the difference. I’ll give free, impartial advice before you buy (new or used), so you only spend what’s sensible.

Only if you want to. Exams can motivate, but they’re never required.
