About Derby Piano Academy

Experienced, patient piano teaching built around the individual

Choosing a piano teacher is about far more than learning notes and technique. It’s about finding someone who understands how people learn — and builds confidence carefully.

I’m Ed Rudak. I’ve taught piano and keyboard for over forty years, and I still believe the same thing: progress comes quickest when lessons feel calm, clear, and well guided.

If you’d like a sensible starting point (child or adult), a quick call is usually the easiest way.

Calm, structured, encouraging tuition

At Derby Piano Academy, lessons are designed to help students enjoy music while building steady, lasting progress.

Every student — whether child or adult — receives tuition tailored to their pace, learning style, and musical interests. The aim is simple: strong foundations, clear weekly direction, and the kind of encouragement that keeps learning enjoyable.

If you’re starting from scratch, returning after years away, or helping your child begin properly, I’ll guide you step by step and keep the plan realistic.

What lessons feel like

  • Clear weekly guidance — what to practise and why it matters
  • Patient correction of technique so bad habits don’t take hold
  • Progress that’s steady and confidence-building (not rushed)
  • Music chosen to keep motivation healthy and consistent

Over forty years of teaching experience

A practical, student-first approach

I’ve helped complete beginners play their first pieces, guided children through ABRSM when it’s the right fit, and supported adults who never thought they’d be able to read music again.

Experience has taught me that progress happens most naturally when students feel supported, relaxed, and encouraged — not pressured.

What families notice first

Parents often say lessons feel calm and clear from the beginning. Students understand what they’re working on, why they’re working on it, and what to do at home.

Over time, this structure builds something more important than speed — it builds belief.

A teaching approach built around confidence and enjoyment

Lessons adapted to the individual

Every learner develops at a different pace. Lessons are structured to match confidence, attention span, and musical interest — so learning stays achievable.

Clear goals, realistic expectations, and practical guidance help students build strong musical foundations while enjoying the process.

A simple weekly plan

You’ll always know what to practise, how long for, and what to listen for. That weekly clarity is what turns “a lesson” into steady progress.

If you’re unsure about instruments, I’m happy to offer free, impartial advice before you buy.
