Online Piano Lessons in Derby

Online piano lessons are a simple, flexible way to learn from home. With a tablet or laptop on a small stand, we can cover everything from your very first notes to polished pieces — calmly, step by step.

What we’ll cover here

  • Quick, reliable set-up for camera and sound (tablet or laptop)
  • Who online lessons suit best
  • FAQs and next steps to book

How lessons work

  • Location: your home — anywhere in Derby and beyond
  • Platform: Zoom (I send a link; one click to join)
  • Duration: 30- or 60-minute weekly sessions
  • Approach: clear reading & technique, with music you enjoy
  • ABRSM: available if you’d like formal goals (never compulsory)

Simple set-up (2-minute checklist)

Camera

  • Use a tablet or laptop on a small stand (angle from your right shoulder works well).
  • Raise the device to key-height so I can see both hands and the keys.
  • (Optional) An external webcam can help, but isn’t required.

Accessories are easy to find on Amazon (tablet/laptop stands, clip-on lights, webcams).

Sound

  • Built-in mics usually work well. If you have a simple USB mic or wired earphones, feel free to try them.
  • Keep the room quiet; place the device ~1m from the keys.

Who online lessons suit

  • Families who prefer learning at home or live outside central Derby
  • Adults with busy schedules — no travel time
  • Students who enjoy screen-shared sheet music and slow-motion demos

Prefer in-person? I also visit homes across Derby and nearby suburbs.

Do I need a piano or keyboard at home?

Yes — a little daily practice makes all the difference. I’ll give free, impartial advice before you buy (new or used) so you only spend what’s sensible.

FAQs

Are online lessons effective for beginners?

Yes. We use clear demonstrations, on-screen resources and a simple practice plan. Progress is steady and confidence grows quickly.

What equipment do I need?

A tablet or laptop on a small stand, plus your piano or keyboard. Built-in mics usually work well; a simple USB mic or wired earphones is optional.

Is latency a problem?

For one-to-one teaching it’s rarely an issue. We don’t perform duets in sync; I demonstrate, then you play — simple and effective.

Can I switch between home visits and Zoom?

Absolutely. Many learners mix formats to suit busy weeks and school terms.
