Children’s piano lessons that build confidence first

With more than forty years of teaching experience, lessons are adapted to your child’s personality, learning style, and musical interests — so they feel successful early on and proud of their progress.

We keep goals realistic, instructions clear, and practice guidance simple enough to fit busy family routines. Most importantly: your child is supported, not rushed.

Online option: If online suits your routine, children’s lessons can run via Google Meet (link provided). I’ll guide you on camera positioning so I can see hands and posture clearly.

How piano lessons support your child’s development

Confidence & self-belief

Children progress fastest when they feel safe to try, make mistakes, and improve. Small musical achievements build confidence — and that confidence often carries into school and everyday life.

Focus & concentration

Piano strengthens listening, co-ordination, and step-by-step thinking. Over time, children learn to concentrate for longer and develop better learning discipline.

Creativity & musical imagination

Music gives children a healthy outlet. As skills grow, they learn to shape sound, play with expression, and develop musical taste — not just “press keys”.

Steady progress without pressure

Lessons are paced sensibly. We focus on good habits, clear milestones, and encouraging feedback — keeping learning enjoyable, achievable, and consistent.

What the first lesson looks like

The first lesson is designed to feel friendly and encouraging. There is no pressure to “perform”. The aim is simply to help your child feel comfortable at the piano and leave the lesson feeling successful.

A quick chat, a gentle warm-up, and simple guidance on posture and hand position — good habits that prevent frustration later.

Something musical

Your child plays something in lesson one — even if it’s simple. Early success builds confidence and helps practice feel positive at home.

Clear guidance

You leave knowing exactly what to practise and how to practise it. Instructions are kept clear, achievable, and family-friendly.

ABRSM exams (optional)

Optional pathway

Exams are never forced. If your child enjoys structure and responds well to clear milestones, ABRSM can be introduced at the right time — calmly, and without pressure.

Many children do best with a balanced approach: pieces they enjoy, alongside reading, rhythm, technique, and musical understanding. The aim is always confident progress — not stress.

Do we need a piano or keyboard at home?

Yes — children need their own piano or keyboard at home for short, regular practice between lessons. That daily contact with the instrument is what creates steady progress.

Frequently asked questions

These are the questions parents ask most often before a child starts. If you’d rather talk it through, just call — I’m happy to advise.

What age can children start piano lessons?

Most children are ready from around age 6, but readiness is not only about age. Helpful signs are: the ability to focus for short periods, follow simple instructions, and genuine interest.

Early lessons are friendly and structured, with quick wins that help your child feel confident — and help practice at home feel doable.

How much practice should my child do each week?

For beginners, short and regular beats long and occasional. A sensible starting point is 10–20 minutes on most days.

I’ll give clear weekly guidance so you know exactly what to practise and how to practise it — keeping practice calm, focused, and realistic.

Are ABRSM exams compulsory?

No — ABRSM is always optional. Some children love the structure of working towards a grade. Others do best when the focus stays on confidence, enjoyment, and steady improvement.

If exams would suit your child, we introduce them at the right time, without pressure.

Do you teach children online as well?

Yes. Online lessons can work extremely well for children with a simple setup. Lessons run on Google Meet — I send a link, you click to join.

I’ll guide you on camera positioning so I can see hands and posture clearly, and your child still gets practical, step-by-step feedback.

What kind of keyboard is suitable for a beginner?

A starter keyboard can be fine, but to avoid outgrowing it too quickly, look for touch-sensitive keys and ideally a sustain pedal. Weighted keys can be a plus, depending on budget and space.

If you’re unsure, call first — I offer free, impartial buying advice so you get the best value for your money.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please give at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. That helps keep weekly learning consistent for everyone.
